Why DataScience@SMU

Employers are seeking data-driven candidates with the advanced technical skills and business acumen to make strategic, informed decisions in today’s global business environment.

To meet the demand, DataScience@SMU features an interdisciplinary curriculum that draws from three SMU schools: Dedman College of Humanities and Sciences, Lyle School of Engineering and Meadows School of the Arts. Students apply the tools and methods used by data science professionals to complete project-based assignments and participate in real case studies that solve organizational challenges.

Our students cultivate the skills necessary to meet the current high demand for data science professionals in various industries. The program features corporate networking opportunities that allow students to advance their career while working toward completing their degree.

Students become equipped with the critical tools needed to make well-informed decisions and immediately apply what they learn to their career. Students can choose an optional Machine Learning Specialization or Business Analytics Specialization to gain a more in-depth competency related to their interests and become sought-after professionals in the field of data science.

Learning Objectives & Course Highlights

The online Master of Science in Data Science program matches the academic rigor and standards of SMU’s on-campus programs. Students learn techniques to effectively manage and analyze data and make strategic decisions. SAS, Python and R programming languages are used as a foundation to cultivate technical skills in areas that include statistical analysis, programming, data mining and network security.

The interdisciplinary curriculum is designed for students to develop and strengthen the following skills:

Statistical Analysis

Statistical Analysis

Students will learn experimental design and methods, including developing the statistical techniques to form relevant questions, collect and analyze appropriate data and make informed decisions.

Technical Skills

Technical Skills

Students will cultivate technical skills in statistical analysis, programming, data mining, machine learning, database management and data and network security. Both Python and R programming languages are used extensively throughout the program as the foundation of these technical skills’ applications.

Visualization and Communication

Visualization and Communication

Students will not only develop the oral and written communication skills to successfully summarize and present results to non-experts in various industries, but they will also learn several approaches to data visualization, including visual and information design principles and creative coding.

Applied Data Science

Applied Data Science

Students will take an interdisciplinary approach to the practical application of analytic and mathematical principles, bringing together methods, concepts and practices in the data science field.

Immersions

From the very beginning of the program, a heavy emphasis is placed on networking so that students have the opportunity to form close relationships with current and aspiring data science professionals. Students are required to attend at least one on-campus immersion during their time in the program. It is recommended that they attend in their first term. During the three- to four-day experience, students will engage with classmates, faculty, industry leaders and employers for collaborative, hands-on workshops, panels, lectures and informational sessions. Students will also return to campus at the end of the program to present their Capstone project presentations.

      Muralidhar Rao

      He joined NIIT (which was an education start-up) in the Eighties and was a member of the core management team that scaled up the organization to an organization running more than a thousand education centres across the World in a decade. He later moved over to another start-up in the area of sales training and leadership development (NIS Sparta) – which primarily operated in B2B space. As the COO, he scaled up delivery and engagement operations catering to over 300 corporate customers with a team of over 600 trainers/ consultants – all within a span of eight years. NIS Sparta is acknowledged as a pioneer and a benchmark organization for sales training in India. He was the Founder CEO of Future Human Development Limited where he successfully launched Management Education, Corporate Training and Skill Development businesses. Later, as Business Head for Bridge School of Management, he handled sales and operations of both B2C and B2B channels for Business Analytics and Digital Marketing. He is an Executive coach / mentor for CXOs and also teaches the subject of Business Acumen for students and executives.

      Douglas Gray

      He has experience across a variety of industries, including most notably Airline, Travel & Hospitality, Health Care, and Financial Services and has held several leadership positions in organizations including SouthWest Airlines and Walmart

      Mr. Gray has an MBA from Southern Methodist University and an MS in OR from Georgia Institute of Technology. He is also currently an Adjunct Professor of Business Analytics in SMU.

      She has worked on a number of EPSRC and Innovates UK funded research projects with global industrial partners, mainly from automotive and aerospace sectors.

      Samantha Ackers

      Professor Ackers joined Austin Community College (ACC) in 2015 as an Adjunct Professor of English and Student Development. For the last 5 years, Samantha has been teaching college and career readiness/success courses at ACC which includes college students and dual-credit high school students using Raymond Gerson’s, “Achieve Career Success: Discover and Get the Job You Want” and “Achieve College Success: Learn How in 20 Hours or Less.”

      As an Adjunct Professor, she serves the community through outreach and education training sessions with Raymond Gerson geared toward preparing Educators to teach the Student Success Courses. Also, working as an ACC Ascender Mentor and ACC Digital Faculty Scholar keep Samantha engaged in researching innovative methods to help Students enjoy Life while Working towards reaching their Goals.

      Dr. Laura Moody

      She has taught Ergonomics and Human Factors, Probability and Statistics, Engineering Economy, Innovation, and other courses at the undergraduate and graduate level for a combined total of 30 years. During this time, Dr. Moody also served as an advisor on numerous senior design projects and master’s theses, providing guidance on engineering design and statistical analysis. Dr. Moody earned her PhD from the Georgia Institute of Technology in 1993 and has also worked as a member of the engineer staff, a manager, and a consultant for companies in the consumer products, aerospace, defense, and healthcare industries.

      Dr. Bugra Alkan

      His research focuses on developing methodologies that enable the creation of robust, self-adaptive and self-optimised cyber-physical systems (CPS). In recent years, he has led the development of several engineering tools to support lifecycle engineering of CPSs. These include tools for runtime data collection & monitoring, virtual commissioning, and digital twins for CPSs. Dr Alkan has worked on many EPSRC, Innovate UK and ARTEMIS funded research projects, e.g., Knowledge Driven Configurable Manufacturing (KDCM), Automated Module to pack Pilot Line for Industrial Innovation (AMPLiFII), Virtual Manufacturing (V-MAN) and Thales-Bristol Partnership in Hybrid Autonomous Systems Engineering (TB-PHASE) in collaboration with automotive manufacturers, machine builders and control vendors. Prior to joining LSBU, he worked as a Post-doctoral Research Fellow at the University of Bristol, UK. He has authored and co-authored several peer-reviewed journal publications and conference proceedings.

      Dr. Novin Ghaffari

      Dr. Novin Ghaffari interest in quantitative methods and data science began in his business courses, which he further pursued in graduate school. The topic of his master’s thesis was the application of heavy-tailed distributions in time series; his PhD thesis focused on optimal transportation problems and applications to statistical algorithms. He has had over 7 years’ experience in teaching and TAing math and statistics courses, and he has had several years’ experience conducting research for academic, corporate, and national laboratory end users. His research interests include mathematical statistics, probability theory, machine learning, optimization, and predictive analytics and his preferred coding languages are R and Python.

      Suresh Shivaram

      Currently engaged in the field of Education having set up an organisation eTUL to develop a package SpeakToSchool for educational institutes to enhance communications within the school community – Parents, Teachers, Students and Administration.

      Gurudutt Shenoy

      He has a wide range of experience in various industries and International brands – Toyota, Ford, Kia, Wipro, and Widia Kennametal. As CX and Education Mentor, he teaches Marketing for MBA and is driving several initiatives towards strengthening Education- Industry interface. He conducts Training Programmes and Webinars in CX regularly.

      He is an Engineer from NIT, Karnataka and a PGDM from IIM, Calcutta.

      C S Venkatesh

      Currently engaged in providing comprehensive skill-building in the area of Analytics, Supply Chain & Operations Management through Education and Consulting.

      Dr. Ramesh Rajagopalan

      He has over two decades of Industry experience driving business value of USD 200M annually through advanced analytics at global companies including Dell Technologies, IBM and Deloitte Consulting. Directed a global MSBA program in McCombs School of Business, University of Texas (Austin) to successfully elevating it to a top program in the US. Ramesh holds a PhD, MSIE, an Executive MBA and a BTech.
